Heaphy Track

The Heaphy Track in Kahurangi National Park is one of New Zealand's most diverse Great Walks, traversing native forests, tussock downs, and spectacular West Coast beaches. This historic route follows parts of an ancient Maori trading path and later gold miners' routes.

Outside the peak walking season the Heaphy Track is also open to mountain bikers; check DOC for the current biking dates.

The Heaphy Track requires bookings for huts and campsites during the Great Walks season (1 October - 30 April). Peak summer dates book out quickly.

What affects availability

• Walkers and mountain bikers: both use the track in the seasons it is open to bikes
• West Coast weather: conditions can lead to changed plans and late cancellations
• Multi-day trip: a cancellation can free up a full set of hut nights
