Sold out on a Great Walk? Practical next steps

If the hut chain you wanted is full, you still have options that do not depend on a DOC waitlist — because there is none.

Check related inventory on the same walk

• Campsites on the Routeburn, Kepler and Abel Tasman are separate from hut bunks and sometimes have space when huts do not.
• Direction matters on the Routeburn and on several other walks — the same huts line up on different dates depending on which end you start from.
• Shoulder dates either side of your ideal window often see more cancellations.

Nearby walks and huts we monitor

Use the track explorer to compare live availability across all ten Great Walks, or browse backcountry huts and campsites — for example Mueller Hut, Welcome Flat Hut and Tōtaranui Campground.

Let alerts watch for you

Set an alert for your exact places and dates on the plans page. When a cancellation reopens, book it immediately on DOC — reopened nights are often taken again within minutes on popular walks.
