How Great Walk cancellation alerts work

Great Walk Watcher checks the same DOC inventory you see at bookings.doc.govt.nz — we do not hold bookings and we are not affiliated with DOC. When a hut or campsite night that matches your dates becomes bookable again, we notify you so you can complete the booking yourself.

What we watch

• All ten Great Walks, polled frequently during the season.
• 24 popular backcountry huts and campsites listed on our huts index.
• The specific places and date range you choose when you create an alert.

When cancellations tend to appear

From patterns we see across seasons (not a guarantee for any one night) — explained in detail in Great Walk cancellations explained:

• After DOC’s primary season release when plans change.
• The weeks before each step in DOC’s published cancellation-fee schedule.
• The final fortnight before a departure date, when plans change.

Free vs paid alerts

Free plans check on a delay; paid plans notify as soon as we detect an opening. Compare limits on the plans page or jump straight to a walk — for example Pouakai Hut or Tongariro Northern Circuit.
