Great Walk Cancellation Alert Services Compared: Schnerp, HutSnag, ReserveNature, NZtracker and Great Walks Online

8 min read · Published 2026-10-04

Last verified 4 October 2026 against each provider's public pages. Prices and tiers change; check the provider before relying on a figure.

Several services now watch DOC's booking site for Great Walk cancellations and tell you when a night reopens. They all do the same basic job. They differ in price, which tracks and huts they cover, how they notify you and how much they ask of you. This is a comparison as of October 2026. We run one of these services, so read our own row with that in mind, and check each provider's site for current prices.

What every one of them does

Poll DOC's booking availability, compare it with the last check, and notify you when a hut or campsite night matching your request reappears. None of them can book for you, hold a bed, or get around the DOC queue on opening day. You still complete the booking on bookings.doc.govt.nz yourself. Anyone claiming otherwise should make you nervous.

The services

Schnerp

Started as a campground alert service for the US and now covers New Zealand DOC huts and Great Walks, plus a growing blog of NZ booking guides. Free tier gives you a limited number of alerts on one request at a time, with paid monthly plans above that. Email, text and push notifications. Strong on polish and reviews; a general outdoor-booking tool rather than a Great Walks specialist.

HutSnag

Covers New Zealand alongside the Tour du Mont Blanc, Inca Trail, Patagonia, the Overland Track and US permits. Pitches itself on matching whole itineraries (dates, group size, pace) rather than single nights. Pricing is not shown on the public page at the time of writing; check their site.

ReserveNature

A US campground and permit tracker that added the Great Walks. Publishes a live per-hut "cancellation observatory" for Milford, Routeburn and Kepler showing which nights reopened recently, which is genuinely useful reading even if you do not use their alerts. Charges per alert set; third-party guides quote a flat fee per alert.

NZtracker

NZ-focused, with a 110% money-back guarantee if no availability is found for your dates within their terms (register at least a week ahead, claim within 30 days). Covers the Fiordland tracks. Worth reading the refund terms before relying on the guarantee.

Great Walks Booking (greatwalksbooking.com)

A free, volunteer-style tool covering Kepler, Routeburn, Paparoa, Abel Tasman and Milford. The public page still references the 2022/23 season, so check it is actively maintained before depending on it for a trip that matters.

Great Walks Online (this site)

Built for the New Zealand Great Walks specifically, by people who kept missing out on the Routeburn. Covers all ten Great Walks and two dozen popular backcountry huts and campsites. The first plan is free, with no card required. Paid tiers add more plans and Telegram and browser push notifications on top of email. We show the cancellations we caught in the last 72 hours on the homepage so you can see it working before you sign up. Set up a free alert.

How to choose

  • Only need one Great Walk, one window of dates? Any free tier will do. Set it up on two services if the trip really matters; they poll at different moments.
  • Watching several tracks or several date windows? Compare the per-plan limits and what a paid month costs. That is where the services differ most.
  • Want push or Telegram rather than email? Not all offer it. Email can land ten minutes late on a phone that is asleep; a push arrives now.
  • Trip is this week? Pick whichever you can set up fastest and watch the DOC site yourself as well. Late cancellations get little competition.

Three things no service can fix

  1. You need a DOC account, logged in, with a card ready, before the alert arrives.
  2. You need to be able to act within minutes. On Milford, reopened nights rarely last half an hour.
  3. The booking has to be in your name. Nobody can transfer one to you.

If you want the mechanics, read how cancellation alerts work, and for timing, when Great Walk cancellations appear.
