Quick answer: most Great Walk huts have gas cookers in the booked season, so many hut walkers only need a pot, a mug, a bowl and a spork. If you are camping, staying in a hut without cookers, or simply want hot drinks on the trail, the Jetboil Flash is the easiest system to use. The MSR PocketRocket 2 kit is smaller and lighter, and better for real cooking.

What the huts provide

Great Walk huts are well equipped in season: heating, water, toilets and, in most, gas cooking benches. They do not provide pots, pans, plates, cutlery or cleaning gear. Not every hut has cookers, and no campsite does, so check the facilities list for each night on DOC's page for your track before deciding whether to carry a stove. Cookers also get busy at dinner time in a full hut. A small stove of your own means hot water when you want it.

The picks

Easiest to use

Jetboil Flash 1.0L Cooking System

An integrated stove and insulated pot that boils water very quickly and packs into itself. Perfect for dehydrated meals, porridge and endless cups of tea.

  • Push-button ignition
  • Stove, gas canister and mug nest together
  • Very efficient, so one small canister goes a long way

Skip it if: you want to fry or simmer real food. It is built for boiling.

Lightest and most versatile

MSR PocketRocket 2 Mini Stove Kit

One of the most popular ultralight canister stoves, sold here as a kit with a pot. Simmers better than the Jetboil, so it suits people who actually cook.

  • Tiny and light
  • Good flame control for simmering
  • Kit includes cookware

Skip it if: it is windy and you have no shelter. It needs a windbreak to stay efficient.

  • Pot (or the Jetboil cup), lid, mug, bowl, long-handled spoon or spork.
  • Lighter or matches as a backup to push-button ignition.
  • Small sponge or cloth, and a rubbish bag: pack out everything you carry in.
  • Gas canister bought in New Zealand.
